birders can ride on the rice-cutting combine and watch as the yellow rails are flushed by the rice harvesting -- no rails are ever flushed intentionally, so you can ONLY ride the combine when the rice is actually being harvested

Here's a round-up of photographs from Yellow Rail and Rice Festival 2011, which you can read about by clicking here for

. Oh, and don't forget to check the all-important trip list. Keep in mind, those folks who did the side trips to Cameron got a MUCH, much longer list, but you can see we did all right for ourselves, just taking it nice and easy on our way to 9 new Louisiana state birds and 3 new lifers.

the rails are way too fast for my little camera to photograph, but a wildlife official picked up this feisty water snake exposed by one of the cutting operations and allowed me to snap a photo -- others herps seen include leopard frog and american alligator

after the storm that passed through on friday morning, the fields glowed with a mysterious golden light on the rice, in contrast to the gloomy skies...most dramatic!

the rice plant was a modern operation complete with its own power plant, with all electricity being generated by burning rice hulls -- 20% of the power is used to operate the plant and the remaining leftover power is sold back to the power company

this handsome field held many and many a killdeer, some busy northern harriers... and our american golden-plovers
